About Jigsaw Sudoku

Jigsaw Sudoku (also called irregular sudoku) swaps the familiar 3×3 boxes for oddly shaped regions. The rules stay the same, but the shapes break the usual patterns and reward careful scanning. Every puzzle here has exactly one solution.

How to play

Fill the grid so every row, column and coloured region contains 1–9 exactly once. The regions replace the usual 3×3 boxes and come in irregular shapes, each with nine cells.

Each irregular region holds 1–9

Tips and strategies

  • Look where a region pokes into a neighbouring row or column — those cells are often forced.
  • Use the 45 rule: a group of whole regions covering some rows lets you find the cells that stick out.
  • Tinted regions make it easy to see which cells belong together; check each region like a box.

Jigsaw Sudoku strategy guide

Treat each coloured region exactly like a box: scan it for the digits it is missing and check where each one can still go. Regions that snake across several rows hide easy placements, because their cells see many different lines.

Use the law of leftovers. Any band of whole rows contains each digit once per row, so compare the cells of regions that stick out of the band with the cells of regions that poke into it — the two groups must hold the same digits.

Watch regions that lie almost entirely in one row or column. If a digit of such a region can only go in that line, remove it from the rest of the line.

Frequently asked questions

What is Jigsaw Sudoku?

A 9×9 Sudoku whose 3×3 boxes are replaced by nine irregular, coloured regions of nine cells each. Every row, every column and every region must contain the digits 1–9 once.

Are the regions different in every puzzle?

Yes. Each puzzle starts from the regular boxes and reshapes them by swapping border cells between neighbouring regions, so every region stays connected and still has nine cells.
