Skyscrapers
Build a city skyline from the clues on its edges.
About Skyscrapers
Skyscrapers is a Latin-square logic puzzle with a clever twist: you only get clues from the outside, counting the towers visible along each row and column. Every puzzle here has exactly one solution.
How to play
Each cell holds a building from 1 to the grid size storeys tall, and every row and column has one building of each height. A clue outside the grid says how many buildings you can see from there: taller buildings hide shorter ones behind them.
Tips and strategies
- A clue of 1 means the tallest building stands right next to it.
- A clue equal to the grid size means the heights rise one by one: 1, 2, 3…
- Two big clues on opposite ends of a line push the tallest building toward the middle.
Skyscrapers strategy guide
Fill the clues of 1 and n first. Then place the tallest building: to see c buildings, the tallest must stand at least c cells in from that side, so a clue of 3 keeps it out of the first two cells.
Read clue pairs across a line together. With 1 on one side and 2 on the other, the tallest building is next to the 1, and every building between the first one on the 2 side and the tallest must be lower than that first one.
Use the Latin rule as in Sudoku: once a height is placed, cross it out of its row and column, and before writing a height, check how it changes the count seen from both ends.
Frequently asked questions
What do the numbers around the grid mean?
Each cell is a building of height 1 to n, and each row and column has one building of every height. A clue says how many buildings you can see from that side: taller buildings hide the shorter ones behind them.
Which sizes can I play?
4×4, 5×5 and 6×6, with clues on all four sides. If the clues alone would allow two answers, a few heights are given so the solution is unique.
What does a clue of 1 or n mean?
A 1 means the tallest building stands right next to that clue. A clue equal to n means you see every building, so the line rises 1, 2, 3 … n from that side.
