Backgammon
Race your checkers home and bear them off first.
About Backgammon
Backgammon is one of the oldest board games: a race around the board mixed with dice luck and tactics. Build blocking points, hit the computer's blots and bear off first — then climb the leaderboard with your biggest wins.
How to play
You play red. Roll the dice and move your checkers toward your home board (bottom right): tap a checker, then a highlighted point. Each die is one move; doubles give four. You can't land on a point held by two or more of the computer's checkers, but landing on a single one hits it to the bar. Checkers on the bar must re-enter first. Once all 15 are home, bear them off. Bear off all your checkers first to win; a gammon or backgammon scores double or triple.
Tips and strategies
- Making points in your home board blocks the computer's checkers from coming back in.
- Avoid leaving single checkers (blots) within six pips of the computer's checkers.
- When you're far ahead in the race, stop fighting and bring everything home safely.
Backgammon strategy guide
Make points, not blots. Two checkers on a point are safe and block the computer; a lone checker in its reach is an invitation to be hit.
Build a prime. Several blocked points in a row trap the computer's back checkers, especially when they sit right in front of them.
Race when you're ahead. Once the armies have passed each other, hitting stops mattering — bring everything home and bear off as fast as the dice allow.
Frequently asked questions
Which Backgammon rules are used?
Standard rules without the doubling cube: enter from the bar first, a point with two or more enemy checkers is blocked, a lone checker can be hit, doubles give four moves, and you must use as many dice as possible — the larger one if only one fits.
Are the dice fair?
Every roll comes from the game's seed, so the server can replay the whole game exactly and check every move. Nobody, including us, picks a roll for you.
How are wins scored?
Only wins count. A single win scores 100, a gammon 200 and a backgammon 300, plus a bonus for winning quickly. The computer judges each whole turn; on Hard it also avoids leaving blots exposed.
Can I play Backgammon on my phone?
Yes, right in your phone's browser, with no app to install. Tap Landscape to turn the table sideways with a bigger board, or Full screen to hide the browser bars.
Is Backgammon free to play?
Yes. Every game on Puzzimo is completely free and runs in your browser on desktop, tablet and phone — no download or installation.
Do I need an account?
No. You can play instantly as a guest and still appear on the leaderboards. Sign in with Google, Discord or LINE to keep your scores on every device.
How does the daily Backgammon challenge work?
Every day at 00:00 UTC everyone gets the same new puzzle. Only your first finish of the day counts on the leaderboard.
How are leaderboard results verified?
Our servers replay every move of your game and measure the time themselves, so leaderboard results can't be faked.
